Divorce FAQs
What are the grounds for divorce?
Since 2022, England and Wales use no-fault divorce. You no longer need to give a reason or blame anyone. You simply confirm that the marriage has broken down irretrievably, either on your own or as a joint application with your spouse.
How long does a divorce take?
The no-fault process has a minimum timeframe of around 6 to 7 months, made up of a 20-week reflection period and a further 6-week wait before the final order. Sorting out finances or arrangements for the children runs alongside and can take longer, depending on how much is agreed.
Do I need a solicitor to get divorced?
You can apply for the divorce itself without a solicitor. Most people take advice on the finances and the arrangements for children, because the divorce does not deal with those, and getting them right protects you and your family. We advise on as much or as little as you need.
Can we make a joint application?
Yes. Under no-fault divorce you can apply jointly with your spouse, or on your own. A joint application can feel less confrontational where you are both agreed, and we help you choose the approach that suits your situation.
