Our initial consultation is a fixed fee of £180 plus VAT and gives you tailored advice and a plan for your situation. After that, we agree the right basis for your case, whether that is fixed-fee stages or an hourly rate, and confirm the cost before we do the work.

What are the grounds for divorce in the UK?

Since 2022, England and Wales use no-fault divorce. You no longer need to give a reason or blame anyone. You simply confirm that the marriage has broken down irretrievably, either on your own or as a joint application with your spouse.

How long does a divorce take?

The no-fault process has a minimum timeframe of around 6 to 7 months, made up of a 20-week reflection period and a further 6-week wait before the final order. Sorting out finances or arrangements for the children runs alongside the divorce and can take longer, depending on how much is agreed.

Do I need a solicitor to get divorced?

You can apply for the divorce itself without a solicitor. Most people take advice on the finances and the arrangements for children, because the divorce does not deal with those, and getting them right protects you and your family. We can advise on as much or as little as you need.

How is a financial settlement decided?

The court considers all the circumstances, including income, property, pensions, needs and the welfare of any children. Most couples reach an agreement with the right advice, which we make legally binding through a consent order. Where agreement is not possible, the court can decide.

How are arrangements for children decided?

The child’s welfare comes first. Most parents agree where the children live and how they spend time with each parent, often with support from solicitors or a mediator. Where that is not possible, the court can make a child arrangements order.

How does child maintenance work?

Child maintenance is usually worked out by the Child Maintenance Service using a set formula based on the paying parent’s income and how many nights the child stays with them. In some situations a family-based arrangement or a court order is more suitable. We explain which applies to you.

Can I sort things out without going to court?

Often, yes. Many family matters are resolved by agreement, solicitor negotiation or mediation, which is usually quicker, less expensive and less stressful than court. We always look to settle constructively where we can, and go to court only when it is genuinely needed.

What happens to the family home?

It depends on your overall finances, everyone’s needs and any children. Options can include selling and dividing the proceeds, transferring it to one of you, or one of you staying until a later point such as the children finishing school. We explain what is realistic in your circumstances.

Yes. Everything you tell us is confidential and handled sensitively, from your very first call. We know these are personal matters and we treat them that way.
